Apart from God life is meaningless

We have been going through some amazing classes in my third semester at New Tribes Bible Institute. I have gotten to take 2 Corinthians, Romans, Missions in Church History, James and Angelology.

Right now in Romans class we are going through verse by verse and learning about man’s desperate need for God, about how God provided the only way for man to be cleansed, and about our new life in Christ- our justification, sanctification and glorification.

I had always loved reading the Old Testament. I loved seeing how God showed Himself faithful to individual people, fulfilled His promises and did signs and wonders that could have been done by no other than the Creator of the world. But this semester I have seen something else. I have seen how God shows Himself in the New Testament.

As I read through the testimonies of believers and how God worked with the early church it just amazes me. Our God never changes. He is always consistently working with people, staying faithful to His word and His great love is constantly being poured out on us!

We deserve nothing that He has given us, and yet He loved us enough to not only provide the only way to be saved, but that He completely finished the work on the cross. John 19:30 …He said, “It is finished!” There is nothing more we can add to the already finished work of Christ. All we can do is accept the gift by believing in what God says He has already done!

I was so worried before I left home that my focus would get off of God and on other things around me. Last year I really struggled with finding balance in friendships, homework and my personal time with God. God has been so good and faithful to me though.

The more I study His Word and learn about who He is and the personal relationship He wants with me the more I desire to get to know Him more. My focus has remained on God so far and I pray it continues to stay there …because all else apart from God and His will for my life is completely meaningless and unsatisfying.

What I Like About NTBI

I’ve had some great experiences in my time studying the Word at New Tribes Bible Institute. I wanted to highlight some key reasons why I have really enjoyed studying here, with the best reason being last.

  1. Low cost. OK, I admit it, this is one of the best reasons to study at NTBI. But don’t just compare the cost of other Bible schools - consider the low cost in light of all the other reasons.
  2. Good course load. Because of the variety of students that students that come through NTBI, the teachers face the unique challenge of balancing their teaching material between those who have almost no background in studying the Bible to those who have been walking with the Lord for a while and are ready for some deeper teaching. They do a very good job at it. Also, the amount of coursework is just enough- it keeps me busy but not overwhelmed.
  3. Bible-centered study. This should be obvious, considering NTBI is a Bible school, but what I mean is that the mission of the school is help you study the Bible on your own, and allow it to teach and encourage you. For the most part, the goal of NTBI is not to convince you of a particular brand of theology (although they do have their beliefs and teach what they believe to be correct), but to help you see clearly what the Bible says about various issues. There have been issues that I have agreed with the school, those that I have disagreed with the school, but in each case I have been given the space to wrestle with Bible on my own. The teachers are more than gracious in this regard, without sacrificing what they see as sound doctrine.
  4. Committed teachers. I can’t stress enough how much the staff at NTBI is here to minister to students as a priority, not to dish out knowledge but to see genuine spiritual growth in the lives of the students. Each teacher is willing to do for you whatever you need, concerning your school and personal lives. They really are intentional about making a personal investment in the lives of students. This is, hands-down, the school’s strongest asset and cannot be overstated.

I’m so glad God brought us here, and I’m really thankful for the experience thus far. I can’t wait to finish out the next year and see what lies ahead in my study of the Word.

I’d been having a rough week. I was wrestling with future decisions and the prospect of dating a girl I really liked and just wasn’t really sure what God would think about the whole thing.

I was talking with some other people, but mostly kept it to myself. Finally, one day I’d had enough. I needed someone to talk to so I thought “I’ll talk to one of the deans.” I’d hung out with Keith a little bit and my older sister encouraged me to talk to him so I set up a meeting.

That was the first of many meetings with Keith. Ever since then I have had a weekly meeting with him and those have always been some of the most encouraging times of my life. I have truly enjoyed the opportunity to talk through things to see how much of a grasp I have on certain subjects, but also to have someone to rely on for wise, godly counsel.

As I got to know Keith more, he and Jacqueline would invite me over to watch a movie or just hang out. Soon I was inviting myself over just as often as they invited me and have been able to spend so many awesome hours just talking through life with both Keith and Jacqueline.

Looking back at that day where I nervously and somewhat reluctantly went into Keith’s office to talk to him, not even knowing what I was really going to say, I thank God for the opportunity He has given me to spend time with Keith and Jacqueline, enabling us to establish not only a student-mentor relationship, but a true friendship.

Without their ministry to me and their input in my life, my experience at NTBI would not have been as profitable in the least. Their friendship and investment in my life has been incredible, and I thank God for placing them in my life.

I was never warned

Wow my two years at New Tribes Bible Institute are almost over! I don’t think I could ever explain all that God has done in my life through studying His Word during these two years.

My testimony is that God’s Word is life changing. When I came to Bible School I was never warned about this incredible power. They almost need to have a sign on the Bible that says “Warning, if you really try to study and understand this book, your life will be wrecked.”

Some of you may say, "I don’t want that to happen to me!" But let me tell you that this is the best decision I have ever made and I would not trade my experience for the whole world.

We have been going through Christian Life as a two credit hour senior class. One thing that is continually stressed is having that eternal mindset that gives us perspective on this world and focuses us on the life to come.

We are told in Scripture that our lives are but a mist or vapor (James 4:14), yet many believers choose to invest their money, time, and whole lives into this world. I can say that I do not want that to be me; I don’t want to come before the Lord some day and be empty handed having wasted the precious time that He has given me on this earth.

Yeah, this may not be popular thinking, or even a desired mindset in today’s world, but if you are alive and breathing, then God still wants to use you in this world.

Yes all believers have been given eternal life, but Christ doesn’t stop there! He offers us so much more than that. He offers us true life on this earth. He gives us all that we need for life (2 Peter 1:3). I don’t know when God will choose to deliver me from this present body and earthly life, it could be tonight, or tomorrow, or in a year or more. But I know that I want to hear these words from my Savior when I come before Him : “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master” (Matt. 25:21).

I hope that those words encourage you as much as they have encouraged my heart. When life seems to be slamming down on you, just know there is a better one to come!

Truth and lies

As a missionary kid growing up in a remote tribe in Papua New Guinea, God blessed me so much with being able to see clearly the difference between God’s truths and the world’s lies. Coming back to the USA was a huge shock for me -- seeing how mixed up everything is.

As I have spent the last four years in America, I have grown to understand more and more the importance of truth. I have learned that wisdom can not only be gained by my experience, but other’s experiences.

In order to gain more wisdom, I plan on attending New Tribes Bible School in Waukesha, Wisconsin. There I can learn not only deep wisdom from the Bible, but also facts and truths that can help me battle the lies of this world.

New Tribes Bible Institute is a school that is fully devoted to truth.

The two year program will walk me through the Bible with a curriculum that is derived from the wisdom of many great Bible scholars. Students are encouraged to study the Bible for themselves and the school works towards the goal of preparing us to be effective ambassadors for truth.
